Big Daddies
A hulking metal protector bound by conditioning to guard the Little Sisters of Rapture.
The Big Daddy is a fictional character from the BioShock series, representing heavily spliced humans grafted directly into steampunk-inspired atmospheric diving suits. Designed by Irrational Games and promoted as a centerpiece of the franchise, these figures first appeared in BioShock alongside their Little Sister charges. While they emit low-pitched groaning noises similar to whales, their vocalizations were performed by voice actor Stephen Stanton. A six-inch action figure was included in the limited-edition version of the title to commemorate their impact. In BioShock 2, players control a prototype Big Daddy known as Subject Delta, marking a unique shift in the series' perspective.

Lore & Background
Big Daddies roam the underwater dystopian city of Rapture, mentally conditioned through plasmids that strip them of humanity and free will. Their primary directive is to protect Little Sisters, young girls who harvest ADAM from corpses. This relationship was conceived early in development to explore a protector role that appeals to real-world relationships, with Little Sisters referring to their guardians as "Mr. Bubbles" or "Mr. B." Developer Ken Levine described the interactions between players, Big Daddies, and Little Sisters as the cornerstone of the game due to the player's need for ADAM. The suits were designed piece by piece using salvaged city parts, evolving from initial concepts like a wheelchair-mounted version into the iconic Rosie and Bouncer models. A third model, "Slow Pro FUM," was cut late in development but later appeared in BioShock 2 as the Rumbler.
In Their Own Story
In the game's launch trailer, a splicer corners a Little Sister to harvest her ADAM until a Big Daddy intervenes. The ensuing melee sees the splicer's hand drilled through before he injects himself with the Insect Swarm plasmid and attacks with hornets. When the splicer fires a shotgun into the suit's viewport, the Big Daddy is knocked off a balcony but retaliates by ramming its drill through the attacker's back. The scene ends with blood dripping from the drill as the Little Sister cries on the floor; the Big Daddy approaches and holds out an enormous hand for her tiny one to take. In BioShock 2, the player controls Subject Delta, the first successfully pair-bonded Alpha Series Big Daddy. Unlike later generations, if Delta's bonded sister dies or is too far away, he falls into a coma or berserk rage. The Minerva's Den DLC introduces Subject Sigma and the "Lancer" opponent.
Reader's Guide
Big Daddies are armed with rivet guns, heavy drills, rocket launchers, or ion lasers, with Alpha Series equipped with additional weaponry. They do not attack unprovoked but assume an aggressive stance if a player or splicer approaches their Little Sister. If the Big Daddy or the girl is attacked, the guardian retaliates until either it or the attacker dies. A "Hypnotize Big Daddy" plasmid can force them to protect the player, though this abandons the Little Sister and forfeits ADAM collection. Helmet lights indicate mood: yellow for indifference, red for rage, and green for hypnotized friendliness. The Rosie model features a rivet gun and a single oxygen tank on its back, while the Bouncer uses a heavy drill with an engine over the right shoulder.
