Lore & Background

Rosalind Lutece is a physicist in the main timeline of BioShock Infinite who developed the technology enabling the floating city of Columbia. She first encountered Robert Lutece, her male counterpart from another universe whom she calls "her brother," during one of her experiments. Together, they discovered a machine at Rosalind's boarded-up residence capable of producing "tears"—fissures in dimensional time and space leading to alternate universes. Initially working for Father Zachary Hale Comstock, the leader of Columbia, they devised a plan to secure a child successor for the sterile leader. However, upon realizing Comstock intended to use their charge, Elizabeth, to commit genocide by raining fire on "Sodom below," they turned against him. In retaliation, Comstock sabotaged their machine, causing it to malfunction. The Luteces survived but were cast into a quantum state of flux, allowing them to travel freely between universes while remaining unaffected by phenomena within any single one.

In Their Own Story

The narrative reveals that Booker DeWitt was taken from another reality by the Luteces under the pretense of wiping his gambling debts, with the true aim of preventing Elizabeth from becoming Comstock's chosen successor. It is eventually disclosed that Comstock himself is an alternate version of Booker who met Rosalind after assuming a new identity and became obsessed with creating a racially pure paradise. Beyond BioShock Infinite, the twins appear in the Burial at Sea expansion, where they orchestrate events such as Daisy Fitzroy's violent Vox Populi revolution and the rehabilitation of Comstock in a universe containing the underwater city of Rapture. They also guide Elizabeth back to Rapture to liberate a young girl named Sally. Their ability to finish each other's sentences and their synchronized presence throughout the story stem from their nature as parallel versions of the same person.
